Lumo's Cycling Gear With Built-In LED Lights

Lumo's Cycling Gear, Lumo LED cycling jacket

Lumo's Cycling Gear, Lumo LED cycling jacket

At last a fashionable reflective gear for cyclists. Reflective gears are essential when cycling at night however most of the neon colored jacket and reflector stripes makes you look like a traffic cone. Now comes the UK-based Lumo which has launch of their Kickstarter campaign to raise enough funds to develope their fashionable line of reflective, cycling-specific, LED-powered gear.

Their jackets and bags looks ordinary with no reflective seams or bright neon colors that are not easy on the eyes, but once it gets dark you will see the rows of bright LED strips on the front and back, that are designed to be hidden. The LEDs are waterproof and can be wash by machine. It is powered by a removable USB-rechargeable battery pack which is hidden inside. The battery can last from 2 to 6 hours depending on the settings you use.

Lumo's gear includes jacket, parka, backpack, cycling cap and polo with reflective detailing. All apparel is available in women and men cuts and sizes. The Jackets start at $264, while the backpack starts at $200.

Here is their kickstarter page.

How Set Up Your Bike like a Professional

Watch this video from the Guardian on tips from cycling professional on how to set your riding position on your bike for maximum efficiency and comfort. Essential tips from saddle height to cleat positioning.

To check the fit of your bike check:
1. Cleats and pedals - the ball of the foot should sit directly above the cleat spindle. Adjust the position of cleats with an Allen key. Badly positioned cleats can lead to over-extend leg and damage the achilles tendons. It also makes you use more energy , so efficiency will suffer.

On the pedal, use a low tension setting to start off with so it's easier to unclip.

Benefits of wearing cleats include:

a. Avoids muscle strain from incorrect foot position.
b. Makes you more efficient on the bike.
c. You can pedal in a circular motion, so it is easier to ride faster.

2. Saddle position and height- saddles can have their height adjusted, as well as their fore/aft position for a good fit. The correct knee angle helps avoid pain and discomfort on joints.

3. Handlebar setup - stems can be bought in different lengths and spacers added to get the right fit for you. Check the new stem matches the diameter of your fork, as these can vary.

Usually, men have longer arms and differently proportioned upper bodies. Distance between saddle and handlebars is longer on men's bikes.

Winter Jackets That Will Keep You Warm When Cycling

It's really hard to go out cycling during winter, the cold can be numbing and it may want you to skip cycling during winter and use your car instead. Not to worry, there are decent jackets that can keep you warm without burning a hole in your pocket. Staying warm while cycling is important to keep you riding and keep you healthy.

Here are my top three cycling jackets for winter:

1. Proviz Reflect 360 jacket -

Winter Jackets, cycling jackets for winter, winter cycling, winter bikes. snow, jacket
Based on statistics there are more accident that involves cyclists during winter when there are poor visibility. The Proviz Reflect 360 jacket can help you in that area since the entire outer shell surface of the jacket is reflective. It bounces car headlamps light back to the driver, that makes it very visible for motorists. It is a great choice when you are cycling at night and twilight.

The jacket do its job in keeping you warm, it also has rear pocket, and a small interior pocket for your smartphone. It is also waterproof, that makes it poor in the breath-ability department even though it has large vents placed strategically around the jacket.

For safety and visibility, this is the jacket for you.

Price:

2. Polaris Tornado jacket -
Winter Jackets, cycling jackets for winter, winter cycling, winter bikes. snow, jacket

This jacket is stylish and it offers both breath-ability and wind protection but it has poor visibility. The front of the jacket is made from windproof fabric while the back is a lightweight and breathable fabric. The front is completely black which makes it hard to see during the night even though the majority of the back is fluoro yellow.

Price:

3. Giordana Silverline Jacket -
Winter Jackets, cycling jackets for winter, winter cycling, winter bikes. snow, jacket

Here's a great jacket for us women. It has a great fit and do its job as a windbreaker. The jacket is made from durable Corsa fabric that keeps you warm and comfortable during those chilly rides. It also has an inner layer of WindTex fabric that protects you from wind and water but it removes water vapor from your body to prevent overheating. It has DWR (Durable Water Resistant) coating. The jacket has reflective logos at the face and at the back. It also has reflective strips along the three back pockets that helps in the visibility department.

There's also plenty of room for a small pump and other tools with its three large pockets at the back.  What it lacks is a zipped compartments that keeps you from dropping valuables.

Ferguson in Flames

Ferguson in Flames, Ferguson riot, Ferguson burning

This is sad, Ferguson protesters reacts violently with the grand jury's decision not to indict Michael Brown. I've been following the news on Fox and I see people overturning police cars, shattering windows, looting mom and pop stores, burning businesses owned by local residents. This is just insane why will they do that?

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said in an interview that there are at least a dozen buildings burning to the ground and they were at least 150 gunshots from the protesters. Police didn't fired a single shot. One cop was shot but not in danger. Police had made 29 arrests.

If you are fighting for something why destroy private and public properties? why loot?

Here's How you Can Increase Your Biking Speed Like A Pro

cycling, biking, pedaling

Pedaling harder will surely speed you up but here are other ways on how to improve your speed:

Make sure your Elbows are bent and tucked in to lessen wind resistance that slows you down. Try lowering your your body and bend it closer to the bars so you can slice through the wind.

Wear tight cycling clothes, it will also lessen the drag. If the weather is too cold, you can wear ultralight jacket that is windproof and water repellent. You will also need to wear a good quality base layer to keep the moisture away from your skin. A windproof cycle jacket will help keep your body stay warm and comfortable.

Losing weight will also speed you up since you have less force of gravity to deal with. Eating more healthy food and less of sugary stuff will help you lose weight.

Make sure that your Bicycle tires are inflated correctly, having the correct tire pressure will make it easier to spin.

Improve your pedaling efficiency, you can watch this video from Global Cycling Network for tips on how to improve your pedaling efficiency:

Netherlands: World’s Only Solar Bike Lane

Netherlands, World’s Only Solar Bike Lane, solar bike lane, solar, cycling

Netherlands, World’s Only Solar Bike Lane, solar bike lane, solar, cycling

This is amazing news, Netherlands have built the world's first cycling lane made entirely out of solar panels. It is the first of its kind and the SolaRoad is designed to harvest energy from the sun and turn it to electricity. The lane connects two suburbs in Amsterdam and can generate enough electricity to power three households.

The construction started in 2009 and cost about $3.8 million (€3m). It stretches 80 meters, from Krommenie to Wormerveer. It is expected to attract about 2,000 cyclists everyday. The bike lane has already opened last October 21, however the official opening is on Wednesday, November 12, 2014. The bike lane was funded by local authorities and they are targeting to extend it by 10 meters in 2016.

The road is composed of rows of crystalline silicon solar cells, encased within concrete and covered with a translucent layer of tempered glass. It has tilted angle and non-adhesive finish which will help the rain wash off dirt and in effect will keep the surface clean. That will give it a maximum exposure to sunlight.

The creator of the solar powered road aims to produce electricity to power traffice lights, street lights, and even electric cars in the future.

The developers hope to use the electricity produced by the road to power street lights and traffic systems – or even electric cars driving on the surface. At the moment, the road is capable of supplying power for three households.

The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) said that 20% of their 87,000 miles road can be transformed to solar panels that can help produce clean electricity.

I hope this will set an example to other governments to follow and will help minimize our dependence to gas.

Cyclists at Valleys Velo Sportive Race Suffered Busted Wheels Due to Black Spikes

Saboteur, Nantymoel Race, Valleys Velo Sportive race,

Someone sabotage the race by throwing hundreds of black painted drawing pins on the road of a cycling race route that busted 70 participants bikes at the Valleys Velo Sportive race last Sunday September 28, 2014. The assailant dropped the drawing pins on a downhill stretch of road near Nantymoel, Bridgend county right before a hairpin bend.

Athletes were going about 70kmph and acts like these could have resulted to accidents that can injure or even killed someone.

Cyclist Richard Manning 46 was among the participant he said, "I only hope that the culprits are caught and that their punishment is enough to dissuade others from doing this. The placement of these drawing pins on a really fast descent, just before a hairpin bend can only lead to the conclusion that the saboteur was hoping to cause serious injury or even death."

"Painting them black to camouflage them on the road shows a level of planning I find deeply distressing", he added.

Local Police are now investigating the incident and they are looking for the culprits.

Another cyclist Rider Gary Dawes said, ""Black painted drawing pins scattered as sabotage on a fast descent is nothing less than attempted murder."

Colombian Women's Cycling Team Nude Jersey

Colombian Women's Cycling Team Nude Jersey, cycling nude jersey, woman nude jersey

The Colombian women's cycling team have caused a controversy since it appears to make the cyclists nude from their thighs to their midriff. The uniform has a flesh-colored patch from under the ribcage to the top of their thighs. It is also skin tight so from afar or if you have a blurry eyesight they may look naked and it would seem that their privates are showing.

Drunk Cycling is legal in Hungary

Drunk Cycling is legal in Hungary, Drunk cycling, DUI, DUI cycling, DUI riding a bike

In the US it differ from state to state if you will get DUI when cycling drunk. There are no clear cut answer if cycling drunk is legal or illegal in the US since laws from state to state have different interpretation of the DUI law. "A person is guilty of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or any drug if the person drives a vehicle within this state." So different states have different interpretation to the word "vehicle." In Ohio, Florida, and Washington the defined vehicle as "every device capable of being moved upon a public highway and in, upon, or by which any person or property is or may be transported or drawn upon a public highway, including bicycles." So if you got caught by a cop while cycling drunk they may still be able to charge you with public drunkenness or reckless driving.

In Hungary they had a decree that clearly allows cyclists to ride their bike while drunk on major roads despite the dangers that it may pose to pedestrian and the driving public. Hungary has strict laws on drunk driving and they fine you heavily. The Hungary government published on their official gazette signed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban allowing cycling under the influence of alcohol regardless of the level of intoxication as long as the cyclist is capable of steering.

Before, driving intoxicated in Hungary will get you fined $131 if you have blood alcohol level higher than 0.5 grams per liter.

Afghanistan has Female Cyclists

Afghanistan Female Cyclists, female cyclist

Afghanistan Female Cyclists, female cyclist

Afghanistan is country where women are treated with lesser importance and where wear burqas and are not allowed to drive or leave the house without a male relative. Now, they have a female Cycling team. This is a major leap for women in Afghanistan. The Taliban will surely get incensed. The female cyclists in Afghanistan like Marjan Sadeqi and Nazifa are doing extraordinary things by doing what they love which is cycling.

Abdul Sadiq is the coach of four (4) young members of the Afghan National Cycling Federation. The girls wear long-sleeve jerseys with full-length tights. While cycling they draw a lot of attention and people stare at them. Afghanistan is a deeply conservative country.

They used to train old bikes with rusty framed clunkers with kickstands but now they are using carbon-fiber racing bikes courtesy of a nonprofit organization "Mountain 2 Mountain", which has been supplying the Afghan women's cycling team with high-tech gear for the past two years.

This is a really inspiring story I hope they succeed!

Glow in the Dark Bikes, Cheaper Alternative

Glow in the Dark Bikes, bikes, cycle, cycling, glow in the dark cycle

Glow in the Dark Bikes, bikes, cycle, cycling, glow in the dark cycle

Glow in the Dark Bikes, bikes, cycle, cycling, glow in the dark cycle

Glow in the dark bicycles are really helpful if you drive on the road at night. Motorists will have easier time to see you in the dark. In my previous post, I mentioned about Mission Bicycle Company's Lumen Glow in the Dark bike, yes their bikes are stunning, beautiful, and work of art but most of us can't afford $799 for a bike. Luckily, I found a cheaper alternative, Pure Fix Cycles Glow in the Dark which offer glow in the dark bikes for half the price of Lumen. On their website, the price is $399.00 but you can find discounted price on Amazon for just $340 with FREE Shipping.

Pure Fix Cycles Glow in the Dark bikes are fully GLOW-in-the-dark fixed gear bike. The paint that they used is solar-activated, it glows in the dark. You will need to expose your bike from the sun for an hour and it'll glow for more than an hour at night.

When you purchase the bike it comes standard with every components needed to ride a bike right out of the box like grips, front brake and pedals. However, at this time they don't offer bike customization but you can buy additional parts from them if you want to customize it. It's also delivered to you 90% assembled, so all you need to do is attach the pedals, front wheel, seat, handlebars, and brake and you're ready to go.

The bike weigh between 21 and 25 pounds, depending on the size of the bike you ordered.

Our standard fixies are made of steel and weigh between 21 and 25 pounds, depending on size.

I will definitely consider glow in the dark bike to replace my current one, since I was almost hit by a dumb driver last month.

Check it out HERE.

Glow in the dark Bikes

Glow in the dark Bikes, glow in the dark, glow bikes, glowing bikes, cycling, Lumen bikes

Riding your bicycle in the dark is very dangerous, a vehicle may fail to notice you and hit you while on the road that can result to devastating injuries or even death. This is why a San Francisco-based studio Mission Bicycle Company has designed a bicycle which lights up in the dark. This could be the new trend in road cycling.

Lumen which is a patented design that has reflective particles embedded in its steel frame. When there is light, the color is iridescent grey. At dark, the bike frame reflects light, that gives the cyclist extra visibility to city traffic since it is visible from over 300 meters away.

You don't need any batteries and you don't have to turn it on or off. The makers inspiration for designing the glowing bike is from reflective street signs. They collaborated with Halo Coatings to come up with a state-of-the-art technology that allows reflective particles to be applied on 3D structures.

Mission Bicycle guarantees that the Lumen bicycle will glow for 50 years. Shipping is expected to begin this July.

Odd Halfbike

halfbike, onewheel bike, bike, one-wheel bike

halfbike, onewheel bike, bike, one-wheel bike

This bike is pretty interesting ang it's quite unusual. A newly invented odd halfbike that is said to make cycling in city streets easier and more practical eventhough you have to steer through a pole. The halfbike is steered using a central pole, it is equipped with a large wheel and two small stabiliser wheels.

The inventors said that the bike is easy to carry since it is small and you can combine both running and cycling.

Martin Angelov, the inventor of the halfbike said, "I started sketching different concepts for a simplified bike and soon reached a point where I needed to test these concepts in real life." "For some of the early prototypes I used old bicycles and parts I found at the attic. I was amazed how well people reacted to the idea and that made me want to keep up."

Based on what I've watched on the video, it seems hard to steer but really good for working-out. If we can just place a small motor that can assist pedaling, it will be great for daily commute since it is small and easy to carry.

Northern Ireland minister promised "cycling revolution"

cycling in Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland, cycling revolution

Good news for Northern Ireland cyclists, it seems that their government is serious in improving cycling safety on their roads. Danny Kennedy who is Stormont’s minister for regional development promised a "cycling revolution" for Northern Ireland after a visit to Scandinavia to check at the cycling capitals of Copenhagen in Denmark and Malmo in Sweden.

In an interview by BBC he said, "We need to create an environment which invites people to walk and cycle as much as possible. That is my vision for Northern Ireland and I am committed to making it happen."

"It has been very impressive to see at first hand how 'normal' cycling is for the majority of the populations in these cities."

Northern Ireland will be the host of the first three stages of the Giro d'Italia that will took place in May.
